QLD:Third meningococcal case in Townsville
CAIRNS, Aug 2 AAP - A third case of the deadly meningococcal virus has been confirmed
in Townsville following the death of a university student last week.
Queensland Health on Tuesday said a young child had fallen ill with the virus on July
21 but had since recovered.
However, a spokesman said the case was not linked to that of James Cook University
student Gurpreet Singh, 18, who was found dead in his room from the virus last Wednesday.
A second male JCU student is currently in a stable condition in Townsville hospital
after being admitted with the virus on Friday.
"Investigations indicate that there is no connection between the child's illness and
the recent meningococcal cases at James Cook University in Townsville," Queensland Health
Public Health Physician Dr Stephen Donohue said.
Dr Donohue said the child had recovered well and antibiotics had also been provided
to people who had close contact with the child.
Queensland Health has also written to the parents of children who had attended the
same childcare centre as the infected child.
Dr Donohue urged the community to be "alert but not alarmed" about the meningococcal
because the virus was uncommon and not easily spread.
He said 38 cases of the virus had been detected in Queensland this year but Mr Singh
is the only person known to have died as a result.

QLD:Labor, LNP battle on economic credentials
By Kym Agius
BRISBANE, April 6 AAP - Queensland MPs have spent the morning arguing over which side
of politics is the worst economic manager.
The opposition used question time in parliament on Wednesday to attack the government's
debt levels, saying Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman did a better job managing
the budget as mayor of the Brisbane City Council.
LNP parliamentary leader Jeff Seeney asked why the state Labor government's total debt
this year was 122 per cent of its annual budget, compared to 37 per cent at the council.
The questions were met with loud heckling from Labor MPs.
"I wonder who wrote that question?" Ms Bligh told parliament with a laugh.
Mr Newman cannot participate in parliament until he wins a seat and is leading his
party to the election from the outside.
The former mayor has said he will work with LNP members from the sidelines of parliament
to script questions.
The debate over financial credibility descended into an exchange of accusations.
Mr Seeney said the health crisis, water crisis and the Traveston Dam bungle had contributed
to the state's debt level.
"Does the premier believe that ... the financial management record of the state Labor
government ... has been a disaster when compared with the financial management record
of the Brisbane City Council led by Campbell Newman?" he asked Ms Bligh.
The premier hit back saying Mr Newman, as mayor, put $750 million into the Clem7 tunnel,
which nobody uses and is now in receivership.
"The former mayor of Brisbane has been out borrowing, borrowing, borrowing, committing
money for his pet projects," Ms Bligh said.
"It means that from 2008 and 2015 the debt levels of the Brisbane City Council will
rise by 427 per cent."
LNP deputy Tim Nicholls attacked Treasurer Andrew Fraser, saying he had plunged the
state into $52 billion of debt.
Mr Fraser said hard decisions, such as spending money on hospital upgrades, the northern
busway, and duplicating the Gateway bridge, had to be made to save jobs.
"We stood up at a time when Queensland needed it most. We committed to a building project
that kept more than 100,000 people working in the state," Mr Fraser told parliament.
He said the council had failed in the airport link, Clem 7 tunnel and the Go Between
Bridge and Queenslanders should be wary of Mr Newman's financial capabilities if he ever
became premier.
"We say to the people in Queensland, to the people in Townsville and Cairns, that see
Campbell Newman coming their way, don't let Campbell Newman do to Cairns and Townsville
what he's done to Brisbane," Mr Fraser said.
Mr Newman is due to appear before the media after question time on Wednesday afternoon.

Liberal backbencher Alex Hawke backed up Ms Bishop.
"The focus today is on the victims of this tragedy," he told Sky News, adding that
any immediate political debate would be unhelpful.
"I think it will be something that will be considered down the track, but at the moment
the human tragedy and the crisis ... has to remain the focus."

SA: Drivers admit to mobile phone use with kids aboard
ADELAIDE, April 7 AAP - Fifteen per cent of Australian parents have used a handheld
mobile phone while driving with their children in the car, a survey has found.
But only half of those quizzed were worried about being fined for using a handheld
phone, the survey showed.
The survey of 1,000 people from all states and territories was commissioned by Telstra
and has led the telecommunications giant to call on all drivers to take extra care on
the roads over Easter.
"Our message to motorists this Easter is simple and important - make safety your most
important call and don't use a handheld mobile phone instead of concentrating on the road,"
said Telstra spokeswoman Jenny Young.
"You wouldn't read the paper while driving, so why would you drive while talking or
texting on your handheld mobile?
"Not only is it illegal, it's also extremely dangerous."
Telstra also urged motorists to plan their calls during scheduled rest stops and to
tell family and friends not to call them while they are driving.

Vic: Melbourne trams diverted by taxi protest
MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - Trams were being diverted around central Melbourne this morning
because of a taxi drivers' protest.
Traffic in central Melbourne has also been disrupted by the protest rally, which began
last night and continued this morning.
Tram diversions will continue until the end of the protest, called to express concern
over driver safety following the stabbing of a cabbie.
A Yarra Trams spokeswoman told AAP the protest had not caused too many delays because
the diversions had been in place.
"Some people may have had to walk a few extra blocks, but apart from that it's been mostly OK."
Trams that normally head along Swanston Street have been diverted along other main
roads in both directions.
Some trams are terminating at Federation Square and shuttles are in place to help passengers
get to their destinations.

WA: Man dies when car hits trees in Perth
PERTH, April 27 AAP - A 19-year-old man died when his car left the road and hit trees
in suburban Perth.
Police believe speed was a factor in the accident in the southern suburb of Hammond
Park about 8.30pm (WST) yesterday.
"It seems that he may have been speeding as he has entered a left hand bend, and has
driven onto the left hand verge of the road," a police spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman said he then lost control of the car and hit trees along the verge,
causing the car to flip before coming to rest.
The man's death takes Western Australia's road toll to 61, up from 58 last year.

Restaurateur has no beef about name change
By Cindy Wojdyla Cain Sun-Times News Group Vince Viriyakul thinks he has found a creative way to beef up sales at his restaurant on Joliet's West Side. The 27-year-old Plainfield man said he will legally change his name to Vince Beef, or Mr. Beef to you, if he gets 2,000 fans on his restaurant's Facebook page. "We're doing everything we can to spread the word," said Viriyakul, who owns Mr. Beef and Gyros at 2302 Essington Road. "You've go to do something crazy every once in a while." Since he took over the restaurant in February, Viriyakul said friends and associates started calling him "Mr. Beef." So he figured he might as well make it official. Mr. Beef's Facebook fans will get coupons and special offerings for "friending" the business. The Facebook challenge is just one ingredient in Viriyakul's promotional menu. He also has created a Web site - www.mrbeefgyros.com - printed up Mr. Beef T-shirts, created daily sandwich specials and attended local fests and fairs. He also has a dine-in promotion - buy five sandwiches, get the sixth free. "I've been looking for different ways of networking, and the Internet is the main source for that nowadays," he said. "And with Facebook, everybody is on there." Viriyakul, a 2000 Bolingbrook High School graduate who has a degree from Northwestern Business College, said the restaurant wasn't doing well when he took over. But now things are picking up. "It's like we're basically starting from scratch," he said. "We're seeing progress. Everyone who comes in here tells us the food is better." Whether or not the promotion boosts sales, one thing is certain - beef is easier to pronounce than Viriyakul.
DOT enforcing prohibited placard restrictions on trucks.
M2 PRESSWIRE-3 January 2002-US DOT: DOT enforcing prohibited placard restrictions on trucks (C)1994-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:02012002
In an effort to protect the traveling public, the U.S. Department of Transportations Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) today announced that it is enforcing a requirement prohibiting motor carriers from placing extraneous information on placards and in placard holders. These devices are reserved for hazardous materials information.
This action enforces a requirement of the Departments Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) that prohibits in the placard holder any sign, advertisement, slogan (such as Drive Safely) or device that could be confused with any placard containing hazardous materials information.
The prohibition, which became effective Oct. 1, 2001, subjects violators to a civil penalty of at least $250 and not more than $27,500 per violation and possible additional enforcement action by FMCSA.
FMCSA believes that extraneous information displayed on placards, placard type displays and in placard holders detracts from the basic function of the placard and reduces the ability of emergency responders to readily recognize vital hazard alerting information. Placards must be strictly reserved for hazards communication and all other confusing or conflicting displays prohibited.
Additional information is in the final rule, which is on the Internet at: http://hazmat.dot.gov/hm206.pdf and http://hazmat.dot.gov/rules/hm206.htm
