Vic: Melbourne trams diverted by taxi protest

MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - Trams were being diverted around central Melbourne this morning
because of a taxi drivers' protest.

Traffic in central Melbourne has also been disrupted by the protest rally, which began
last night and continued this morning.

Tram diversions will continue until the end of the protest, called to express concern
over driver safety following the stabbing of a cabbie.

A Yarra Trams spokeswoman told AAP the protest had not caused too many delays because
the diversions had been in place.

"Some people may have had to walk a few extra blocks, but apart from that it's been mostly OK."

Trams that normally head along Swanston Street have been diverted along other main
roads in both directions.

Some trams are terminating at Federation Square and shuttles are in place to help passengers
get to their destinations.
