NSW: P-plate deaths now double the amount of last year

New South Wales Police Minister JOHN WATKINS has defended his government's record on
road safety .. after coming under pressure to boost the number of highway police .. following
the death of yet another P-plate driver.

He says they've improved and increased the amount of training P-plate drivers have
to undertake .. and extended the period they're on P-plates.

Opposition Leader PETER DEBNAM has promised a 130 million dollar program to boost highway
patrol numbers by a third .. if he's elected at the March state election.

The death of a 21-year-old man last night marks a near doubling in the number of P-plate
drivers killed this year on the state's roads .. compared with 2005.
