Congress is toying with the idea of replacing the $1 bill with acoin.
Legislation has been introduced calling for the minting of amostly copper coin bearing the likeness of Christopher Columbus.This switch supposedly would save more than $50 million annually, ascoins last longer than dollar bills.
As though our dollar has not been battered enough lately, we nowcould see its image reduced to the status of a copper coin.
Just how sure can we be that $50 million will be saved? If allour $1 bills were replaced with copper coins, it will not be longbefore 50 million pants pockets will need mending and replacingannually. So there goes the $50 million saving …
