NSW: Reaction to extension of injection room trial

Some local residents say Australia's first injecting room at Sydney's Kings Cross hasdramatically improved life in the area.

The New South Wales government says an agreement has been struck with the centre'slicence operators -- the Board of Uniting Care Australia -- to extend the trial.

The 18-month trial officially began on May 1 last year and will now end in October next year.

Local resident and Kings Cross Community Drug Action Team chairman ED ADAMEK says thearea has become a much nicer place to live.

He says people are longer shooting up on people's doorsteps, and there's not nearlythe number of syringes lying around that there used to be.

Mr ADAMEK says the government has made a sensible move by extending the trial.

Local hotel owner and resident TOM MACMAHON says the room has made the area a dramaticallybetter place to live.
